East Jordan Plastics Recognized as Trusted Supplier with PCR Plastic Certification
Jennifer Zurko
East Jordan Plastics recently received their Supplier of Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) Plastic Certification.
This certification ensures that all High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE), Polypropylene (PP) and Polystyrene (PS) flake generated by East Jordan Plastics at their recycling facility in South Haven, Michigan, from used horticultural containers satisfies the requirements for post-consumer recycled plastic consistent with ISO°14021:2016. It also confirms compliance with the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) PCR Certification Program.
“This certification is a big win for us in our commitment to creating sustainable solutions that help our planet and improve our partners’ businesses,” said Owen Diller, Corporate Recycling Manager for East Jordan Plastics. “It has always been our desire to be good stewards in making the best use of our resources, and this certification speaks well to the quality of service we offer our customers and the industry as a whole.”
PCR packaging is made from materials such as plastic, aluminum, cardboard and paper that have been deemed as “used by the end consumer,” offering a sustainable alternative for companies seeking environmentally friendly packaging solutions. It can help companies reduce their carbon footprint, lessen their overall impact on landfills and meet their sustainability goals. And it doesn’t require third-party certification. However, third-party certification safeguards against unvalidated claims, ensuring authenticity and credibility.
The 150,000-sq. ft. East Jordan Plastics recycling facility in South Haven is on track to recycle nearly 20 million pounds of used horticultural containers this year. These will be used to create new horticultural containers, with some products being made of up to 93% PCR. Their facility specializes in transforming these materials into sustainable solutions, aligning with its commitment to an energy-efficient, closed-loop plastic recycling process. Closed-loop is the most circular recycling available—containers are made for the industry, used within the industry and later recycled into new containers for the industry. This initiative benefits growers, the industry and supports environmental conservation efforts.
