Minnesota Nurseryman Lloyd Bachman Dies at Age 90
Jennifer Zurko
Lloyd Bachman, who died July 16 at the age of 90, was an active member of the family’s floral and garden business in the Minneapolis area and had overseen plant production at Bachman’s growing range. He was active in the local and state floricultural scene and inspired many with his commitment to the field and the family business.
Growing up in South Minneapolis, he graduated from Washburn High School, served in the U.S. Coast Guard, and worked in the family business, overseeing plant production at Bachman’s Growing Range in Lakeville.
Lloyd was recognized for his outstanding achievements and contributions to the University of Minnesota College of Agriculture and the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. He served as a charter member and advisory member to the United Minnesota Horticulture Committee, North Central Florists’ Association, Society of American Florists, Minneapolis Men’s Garden Club and other numerous floricultural associations.
As Bachman’s Inc. prepared to celebrate its 125th anniversary this year, Lloyd sat down to share some of his thoughts for the “Growing a Dream” video story. In that interview last October, Lloyd said, “They kind of pinned a title on me as the horticulturist or the flower grower of the bunch.”
Lloyd is preceded in death by his first wife Marion and son, Todd Bachman, who was killed during an attack at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. He is survived by wife, Margaret; daughter, Lynn; daughter-in-law, Barbara; stepchildren, Jim (Mary Ann) Lindquist, Merrilyn (Dave) Tauscher, and Joanne (Steve) Borgwardt and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
