Dramatic, bold and architectural are words often used to describe the commanding features of globe thistles. Echinops bannaticus Star Frost has a shorter habit with nice branching and a profusion of golf ball-sized white blooms, plus decorative foliage. The domed blooms are made up of dozens of tiny individual star-shaped flowers, each with five pure-white slender petals. Besides decorative cut flowers and distinct ornamental value, they are easy to grow in average soils in full sun and are cold hardy to Zone 3.
