Big News x2 from Mossify

The folks at Canadian houseplant accessory company Mossify have been racking up the awards, positive consumer reviews and garden center orders for five years now. Over the last month or so I feel they’ve really upped their momentum with two bits of news about scaling their once-small venture.

First—they bought a moss farm! It’s a 15-acre farm in Northern Ontario. “It’s definitely a big leap for us and something we’ve passionately worked towards for the past nine months,” Thiago Jacques, Mossify’s head of media, wrote to me in an email.

They are cultivating more than 10 species of moss sustainably on that farm. These moss can be used in terrariums, bioactive tanks, bonsai cultivation, decorative top dressing, home décor and wherever else you can think to use them. “We’re fully committed to regenerative growing practices and see this farm as a major step forward in making moss accessible, approachable and even more approachable,” Thiago wrote. Preorders for the moss, which is shipped dormant but can easily be regenerated, started a few weeks ago with official delivery happening at the end of May.

And the Second

The second way they are taking their business up a notch is through a partnership with the folks at Van Belle Finished Plants. Van Belle has begun to integrate Mossify’s Bendable Moss Pole THIN into their tropical plant line, helping to support 5-in. to 10-in. pothos, philodendron and monstera. That pole is indeed thin, by the way, at less than an inch wide. Products from this collaboration will hit major retail stores in August, but you’ll get a sneak peek in July.

Mossify’s CEO Lucas Picciolo, Van Belle’s Rebecca Gebeshuber and Thiago in the back.

“Seeing our product used at scale by such a respected grower has truly been incredible,” Thiago wrote. He says Mossify is actively exploring similar partnerships with other growers across North America. And they are absolutely loving their collab with the Van Belle team.

The Last from CAST

As promised, I am including the last four houseplant-related new varieties that were introduced at California Spring Trials (CAST), now that I have the appropriate photos (thank you for your patience!).

New in Dümmen Orange’s Welcome to the Jungle Collection is Epipremnum Churchill Pothos. Dümmen’s Marta Maria Garcia tells me it’s a variation of Hawaiian pothos that combines the best parts of the Hawaiian and Golden varieties. It keeps the larger leaves and faster growth of Hawaiian but has the deeper variations of yellow from Golden, and it is also more resilient to high-light conditions.

When I attended CAST in past years, I really enjoyed the diversity of products that the Israeli breeder Jaldety had on display. They are good for including a few houseplant-appropriate items in the mix. This year they introduced Kalanchoe pumila Silver.

If it wasn't for the tags I would swear this was a black-and-white photo, that's how silver Silver is!

Silver? I would definitely say so! This is a good item for both indoors and out, if your outdoor environment is conducive to it. Great for arid environments, which accounts for a majority of wintertime indoor conditions. This would be great in a succulent combo container.

And lastly, two kalanchoes—Mandala Apricot Iris and Mandala Double Purple—from the folks at Selecta One. I had to get the photos from them directly, so these are product shots.

The Mandalas are a very uniform series that make for a really nice indoor pot program and the vivid colors make them great as gift items. And you can program for year-round production to hit all the appropriate holidays.

That’s it for the CAST varieties until next year. And if you’re interested in checking out the trials for yourself, the dates for 2026 will be March 24-27. Put it in your calendar.

A New Acalypha

David Bache from Garden Industries unveiled a new Acalypha in the last edition of that nursery’s e-newsletter. It’s Acalypha wilkesiana Camilla’s Kaleidoscope, a Copperhead-style that originated as a sport on a mature shrub at David’s own house. It was different enough in color and form from the parent plant that he decided to develop it into a new intro. Two years later, here it is!

They’ve tested it enough to confirm that it maintains its distinctive foliage. And what a color that is—peaches and corals and yellows and greens. It’s lovely.

Considering they started trialing and propagating this from just two cuttings two years ago, it’s taking a while to get the numbers up. Look for availability to begin in about a year. Worth the wait, I suspect, since it’s such an amazing “kaleidoscope” of colors (see what I did there?). Stay abreast of Garden Industries’ latest news and introductions (this was their 14th) on their WEBSITE and INSTAGRAM, and get on their email list HERE.
